As part of the opening of the Veterinary School Hospital Center (CHEV) for companion animals and to strengthen the Veterinary College, we are looking for a Veterinary Teaching Clinician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care for a permanent contract at the Rouen (76) campus, starting in September 2025.

Responsibilities:

Under the responsibility of the CHEV Director, the Veterinary Teaching Clinician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care (M/F) is responsible for managing emergency consultations and critical care cases within the CHEV for companion animals, applying the principles of evidence-based medicine. They may also be involved in handling referred cases in collaboration with veterinary specialists.

Additionally, they play a central role in the practical training of veterinary students, supervising and actively guiding them throughout their emergency and critical care clinical rotations at the CHEV. This role includes overseeing clinical procedures, imparting practical knowledge, assessing competencies, and providing pedagogical support to help students acquire essential professional and clinical skills.

  • 6 operating rooms: 4 specialized, 1 dedicated to dentistry, 1 for endoscopy, and 1 for educational purposes;
  • 2 radiography rooms, 2 ultrasound rooms, a CT scanner, an MRI, an imaging preparation room, and a spacious reading area;
  • Emergency and critical care unit: 65m² ICU space, plus an emergency area with a dedicated operating room and radiography room;
  • Physiotherapy unit, laboratory with preparation rooms, and oncology unit;
  • A dedicated area for exotic pets (NAC): consultation room, operating room, care and hospitalization spaces, and an isolation unit for contagious cases.

For your comfort, as well as that of the animals and students, we provide:

  • Numerous modern, connected, and well-lit consultation rooms arranged around a central patio;
  • A complete hospitalization area with 2 kennels, 2 cat-friendly certified catteries, and an isolation unit for contagious animals;
  • Distinct and suitable waiting areas ensuring comfort and serenity for each animal and its owner.

The 3,000m² ground-floor technical area is designed to facilitate interactions and provide students with high-quality clinical teaching. The upper floor offers convivial spaces for exchanges with colleagues, teams, and students: a 150m² lounge, a 40m² break room, meeting and debriefing rooms, offices, classrooms, coworking spaces, and a 200m² educational simulation area. The CHEV also has four quiet and comfortable on-call rooms.

Main Missions:

Clinical Emergency Consultations:

  • Perform emergency consultations and manage and monitor critical care and resuscitation cases for companion animals (night and weekend shifts required);
  • Refer complex cases to various CHEV departments;
  • Ensure client relationships and satisfaction.

Pedagogical Support and Student Training:

  • Supervision of clinical practices: Guide veterinary students during their emergency and critical care rotations, teaching them procedures and helping develop practical skills through clear instructions, practical demonstrations, and discussions;
  • Practical demonstrations: Conduct clinical demonstrations (e.g., sample collection techniques, routine care interventions, emergency management) to illustrate best practices and engage students in strategic diagnostic and therapeutic thinking;
  • Continuous professional evaluation: Observe and assess students' competencies in patient interactions and clinical procedures, providing constructive feedback on strengths and areas for improvement;
  • Encouraging autonomy: Promote student autonomy by gradually increasing their responsibilities while maintaining continuous supervision and appropriate support.

Patient Care Management:

  • Oversee clinical case management, from admission to discharge, in coordination with technical and administrative teams;
  • Contribute to workflow management and optimization of the hospital’s clinical organization;
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by applying and updating existing protocols.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in continuous education to maintain updated clinical and pedagogical knowledge;
  • Stay informed about the latest veterinary medicine advancements and apply best practices in consultations;
  • Promote evidence-based medicine within the hospital by fostering knowledge exchange and discussion on recent research and its clinical applications.

Educational Mission:

  • Contribute to the educational mission by ensuring comprehensive student development and optimal preparation for their future veterinary careers;
  • Maintain an exemplary attitude by being available and attentive to students, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Quality Assurance:

  • Assist in establishing, reviewing, and optimizing clinical protocols and specialized care standards;
  • Contribute to strategic planning for continuous quality improvement in collaboration with clinical and administrative teams;
  • Monitor clinical outcomes to assess treatment efficacy and adjust protocols when necessary.

Profile:

  • Holder of a Veterinary Degree with authorization to practice in France and a diploma from the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ECVECC);
  • Experience in emergency and critical care within an emergency center or referral hospital.

Additional Skills:

  • Basic pedagogical skills for student supervision;
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team;
  • Strong communication skills with internal teams and pet owners.
