The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Service of the Small Animal Clinic at the Vetsuisse Faculty,
University of Bern, is seeking a specialist in small animal emergency and critical care for a
temporary faculty position. The position is limited to six months and offered at 40–100 % employment.
Off-clinic time will be adjusted proportionally to the percentage of employment.
About Us
The Small Animal Clinic hosts diplomates in multiple specialties including Emergency and Critical
Care, Internal Medicine (including nephrology), Surgery, Neurology, Diagnostic Imaging, Anesthesia,
Dermatology, and Ophthalmology. Our hospital includes a dedicated ICU and a 24/7 emergency
service, staffed by interns and residents under the supervision of experienced senior clinicians. The
ECC service is a recognized ECVECC residency training center, currently training two ECVECC
residents. We offer access to advanced diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, including CT, MRI,
fluoroscopy, extracorporeal blood purification therapies, and high flow oxygen therapy.
Responsibilities
 Clinical duties primarily in the emergency room where we see all kinds of emergencies in dogs
and cats
 Support of the ICU team as needed (open ICU concept; we assist primary clinicians with
critically ill patients)
 Daytime supervision of students, interns, and residents in the ER
 Clinical teaching of students, interns, and residents (ECC and other disciplines)
 Participation in the after-hours backup system
 Contribution to daily clinical operations, including administrative and organizational tasks
Requirements
 Veterinary degree recognized in Switzerland or the EU
 Diplomate status (or eligibility) of ACVECC, ECVECC, ACVIM, or ECVIM
or
Several years of clinical experience in small animal ECC or internal medicine
 Strong clinical, teaching, and communication skills
 Ability to work well in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment
 Fluency in English; willingness to learn German and/or French is an asset
