Emergency and Critical Care Residency Program - University of Zurich, Switzerland

The University of Zurich Small Animal Hospital announces one standard track residency positions in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, starting July 2025. The 3-year program is designed to prepare candidates for board certification in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. Completion of a small animal internship is required, to be considered eligible for the residency. We recommend that the applicant obtain two letters of reference from postgraduate clinical training (e.g., internship) mentors who can attest to the clinical proficiency and pleasant personality of the applicant.

Supervised immersion training will take place in the small animal intensive care unit and the emergency service of the UZH Small Animal Hospital under the mentorship of 7 ACVECC/ECVECC Diplomates: Alessio Vigani (DACVECC, DACVAA, and DECVECC), Claudia Iannucci (DACVECC, DECVECC), Tommaso Rosati (DACVECC, DECVECC), Franziska Meyer (DACVECC), Roberta Troia (DECVECC), Linda Gabba (DACVECC), Yaiza Herrero (DACVECC). The residency program currently has 4 residents in training. The ECC units are staffed 24/7 by more than 30 veterinary emergency and critical care technicians and supported by an animal blood bank service. Treatment capability and expertise within the ECC service include all extracorporeal therapy, mechanical ventilation, locoregional anesthesia/analgesia, advanced cardiovascular support.

Residents will participate in daytime and after-hours shifts in both the ICU and the emergency service. Residents participate in daily patient rounds, weekly journal and book clubs, and multiple weekly rounds and seminars.

Residents participate in the training of senior students, interns and residents in other programs. A research project will be conducted during the program, resulting in a publication that satisfies the ACVECC credentials requirement. A mandatory requirement is the knowledge of German language, spoken and written at least at B2 level.
