Emergency and Critical Care residency opening at SIAMU, VetAgro Sup, Lyon, France - July 2024
SIAMU, the ECC service at VetAgro Sup is opening a new residency position this July 2024. This opening is an ECVECC-approved 3-year program to replace our outgoing final-year resident and join our 2 other residents and is suitable for any candidate with a strong background in ECC. Candidates should have at minimum completed an ECC-specialty internship, or the equivalent experience as an ECC clinician in a multi-disciplinary referral hospital. Fluent French is essential and working-level English is strongly recommended. We seek a motivated person who can manage a busy caseload, work independently, perform under pressure, whilst contributing to our positive, supportive team spirit here at SIAMU.
The program
The program combines a rich caseload of referral, multi-disciplinary, and primary opinion ER cases that range from infectious AKI requiring RRT, ventilator and HFOT cases, polytrauma referrals, and the rare viper envenomation. Didactic teaching is prioritized with bi-weekly resident teaching sessions. Residents will participate in student teaching, hospital-wide resident forums, and will have funding for at least one national or international ECC conference per year. Research opportunities will be offered in conjunction with our research unit (APCSe)
The team
The program is led by 3 boarded criticalists (2 ECVECC, 1 ECVECC/ACVECC) that share clinical, research, and teaching duties. In addition to the 3 current ECVECC residents, there are 2 specialty interns, and 20 rotating interns, many of whom have a strong ECC interest. We work alongside 5 full time technicians, 1 trainee technician, 2 full time reception staff, 1 custodian, a roster of part time non-technical staff, and students.
The hospital
VetAgro Sup is the oldest veterinary school in the world, and SIAMU has been running for over 23 years as part of the small animal hospital (CHUVAC). We provide referral services in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, imaging (with on-site CT and high field MRI), dermatology, anesthesia, reproduction, cardiology, neurology, nutrition, and complete in-house laboratory services.
We have a fully equipped ICU with 2 dedicated climate-controlled oxygen cages, Opti-flow HFOT, ROTEM, a brand new Maquet mechanical ventilator, 2 ultrasound devices, biphasic defibrillator, infrared thermography, and diagnostic ECG.
The region
VetAgro Sup lies approximately 12 km west of the city of Lyon, the gourmet capital of France (and the world?). It lies at the edge of the urban region, with easy access to the city via public transport, and the beautiful countryside of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The French (and Italian and Swiss) Alps are only 2-3 hours drive, and high speed trains operate between Lyon and Paris for an easy 2 hour journey.
